For the first time in England, Talk Dialect records and revitalises the dialects of England’s 39 historic counties in one central community, time and place.

Your Voice Matters

Play a powerful part in England’s first centralised digital dialect resource by everyone, for everyone, for ever.

The resource will consist of dialect words and sayings from all 39 historic counties — and we’d love you to be part of it.

From community to county to country, Talk Dialect celebrates all of England’s dialects.

What Contributors Do

  • Enjoy connecting with their counties in a unique way.
  • Make new and interesting connections with people and language.
  • Upload dialect words, phrases and pronunciations.
  • Moderate words and sayings to the people who use and say them, giving Talk Dialect its unique crowdsourced authority and authenticity — real words by real people.
  • Collect words and stories from families and friends.
  • Create external links to contributors’ dialect audio and visual content on social media.
  • Help give old people their voices back.
  • Instil a sense of pride in younger people in the place where they live.
  • Help with local networking, events and workshops.
  • Map the rich linguistic heritage of our counties and country.
  • Develop national and international dialect groups and other organisations that love language.
  • Support a national social enterprise community interest company dedicated to preserving, protecting and promoting our spoken identity, dialect language heritage and oral history.

Your participation ensures that local voices power our national story from the ground up.
